We love honoring the best in Bay Area Black media, and we need a full house Saturday to give them the encouragement they amply deserve. Please come show your love to this year’s amazing award winners. You may know most or all of them, but let me introduce them with a few words that don’t begin to recognize their greatness:
Kevin Weston, beloved journalist, editor and mentor of a new generation of media-makers
Emory Douglas, Black Panther Party Minister of Culture, Black Panther newspaper artist, author of “Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas”
Marcus Books, oldest Black book store in the U.S., a landmark for generations hungry for Black history and culture
Harrison Chastang, News Director at Black-owned KPOO Radio, 89.5 FM, technology adviser to Black media
TaSin Sabir, journalistic and artistic photographer extraordinaire, author of “Madagascar Made”
Deverol Ross, the genius who keeps media humming, engineer for KPFA and Black broadcast media
Leroy Moore, founder of Krip Hop Nation and Sins Invalid, multi-media promoter of the achievements of Black disabled people worldwide

These heroes make media of the people, by the people and for the people, navigating minefields of racism daily. Be there to honor and support them – and to be transported by performers pianist Kev Choice, comedian Donald E. Lacy and djialli (griot) Phavia Kujichagulia and her band Ma’at.
And be there early at 6 p.m. to celebrate Bay View publisher Dr. Willie Ratcliff’s 82nd birthday! Your support will keep the SF Bay View and Block Report Radio going and growing.
“The thing to do is to get organized,” declared the Hon. Marcus Garvey. “Keep separated and you will be exploited, you will be robbed, you will be killed. Get organized and you will compel the world to respect you.” In the face of that challenge, we will gather together Saturday in the loving arms and spirit of Kevin Weston, who still whispers in our ear, “No matter what, keep writing!”
